01 · Identity

The mark, the construction, the rules.

Heart Industry is built from one wordmark in three lockups. The heart glyph replaces the A. Red lives only there. Everything else is black, off-white, or one of the neutrals between them.

Clearspace

Minimum clearspace around the mark equals the cap height of "H." Never crowd, never overlap.

Heart construction

SVG glyph. Width 0.95em, height 1.15em (taller than the letters). Negative margin-inline of 0.04em pulls it tight against E and R. Lives at :root level as inline SVG.

Wordmark face

Baron Neue 900 for HEART. Inter 600, wide tracked, for INDUSTRY. The two are a lockup — never typeset separately as headlines.

The red

The heart glyph is the only place red appears as solid colour on the mark. Never colourise HEART. Never alter the red hex.

Backgrounds

Mark works on Ink (default), Paper (light card), or Charcoal (subdued). Never on photography — use a contained colour panel.

Minimum size

Wordmark stops being legible below 80px wide. Below that, use the favicon-sized stamp variant (PNG) instead.

02 · Palette

Three colours. Five neutrals.

Disciplined palette. Red is the only saturated colour in the system — it earns its presence by being the only thing in red. Black and off-white set the field; the greys layer surfaces.

03 · Type

Three tiers. One job each.

Baron Neue for the brand mark. Bricolage Grotesque for display headings and large display moments. Inter for everything that needs to be read at body and medium sizes. No mixing — each tier has a clear job.

Hert Industry

Baron Neue 900 (Black) · Self-hosted OTF · Locked to wordmark instances only · Never used for body or paragraphs

Tier 2a · Display Mega

Tier 4 · Eyebrow / Micro

Edinburgh · Covers · Four-piece

Inter · Weight 600 · 0.75rem · letter-spacing 0.22em · UPPERCASE · Red on dark, ink on light

04 · Voice

Confident. Direct. Mature.

Heart Industry talks like a working musician who has nothing to prove. Short sentences. Strong nouns. No marketing-speak. Read every line out loud before publishing.

Do

  • Lead with the proposition, not the brand
  • Use specific nouns: weddings, corporate, festivals, private
  • Name credentials: Hipsway, KT Tunstall, Horse, Bjorn Again
  • Short sentences. Fragments are fine.
  • Confidence without arrogance — facts, not boasts
  • Reference real songs and real eras
  • One emphasis per paragraph maximum

Don't

  • "Best in Edinburgh" / "leading band" / superlatives
  • "We're excited / thrilled / passionate"
  • "Let's dive in" / "On your journey" / "Take it to the next level"
  • "Empower / unlock / curated / bespoke / tailored"
  • "Crucial / vibrant / foster / leverage / navigate / resonate / showcase"
  • Tricolons (groups of three) — too AI
  • Em-dash overuse — max one per 500 words

05 · UI

Restrained. Tactile. Decisive.

Two buttons. Two background grounds. Subtle interaction states. Click feels like decision, not novelty.

Buttons · Dark ground

Primary = red filled. Ghost = paper outline. Hover lifts 2px + soft red glow on primary.

Buttons · Light ground

Primary unchanged. Ghost = ink outline on paper.

Divider

Red bar, 56×3px, marks section breaks above eyebrows.

Chips

Weddings Corporate Private Festivals

Booking-type chips. Ink-elevated fill, ink-line border, pill shape.

06 · Motion

Almost none. By design.

Elite brand sites restrain motion. No scroll-jacking. No parallax. No animated reveals. The page is still — the type and photography do the work. Three permitted transitions, that's it.

Hover lift

Buttons and cards translate up 2–3px on hover. Subtle, confident, never bouncy.

160ms ease-out

Arrow shift

→ arrows nudge 3px on button hover. Reinforces the click direction without distracting.

160ms ease-out

Header opacity

Nav background fades in once page scrolls past 4px. Never re-disappears.

280ms ease-out

07 · Application

Across mediums.

The brand kit extends to posters, social, email, merch, print. The wordmark stays consistent; the surrounding system (palette, type, voice) carries the brand across formats.
